Always go by height and weight limits — not age. A taller or heavier child may outgrow a seat earlier than the age guide suggests. All seats are approved under the international UN R129 safety standard.

It depends on which seat you choose:

• Minikid Core — seat belt only. No ISOFIX required. Compatible with almost any vehicle.
• Minikid 4 Max — seat belt only (plus tethers to front seat). No ISOFIX required.
• Spinkid 2 — ISOFIX only. Your vehicle must have ISOFIX anchor points. No seat belt installation option.
• Axkid Up — uses ISOFIX for stability and the vehicle's own seat belt to secure the child. ISOFIX optional.

Not sure if your car has ISOFIX? Check your vehicle manual or look for the ISOFIX label between the rear seat cushion and backrest. Most vehicles made after 2004 have it, though coverage isn't universal.

All Axkid seats sold at Mom Store have a 10-year expiry from manufacture date (the Axkid Up has a 15-year product lifetime). This is clearly marked on the seat. After the expiry date, the seat should not be used — materials and plastics can degrade over time, which can affect crash performance.

In terms of how long your child will use the seat: the Minikid Core lasts to 28kg (typically to age 6/7), the Minikid 4 Max to 36kg (also typically to age 7), the Spinkid 2 to 18kg (typically to age 4–5), and the Up to 50kg (typically to age 12).

Both are rear-facing seats that install by seat belt only (no ISOFIX), and both keep your child safe from birth to approximately age 7. But the Minikid 4 Max is the premium model with some meaningful upgrades:

If you want the easiest installation and maximum weight limit — and the CompactFit™ to free up legroom in your back seat — the Minikid 4 Max is worth the extra investment. The Minikid Core is a solid, dependable choice at a more accessible price point and is suitable to use from newborn, so a great option if you want to skip the capsule.

All four seats are Swedish Plus Test approved and meet the UN R129 international safety standard — the most rigorous testing available.

The Axkid Up ($1,049) is genuinely the most advanced booster seat for older children available in New Zealand. Here's what sets it apart:

Yes — the Spinkid 2 is suitable from 40cm / newborn and comes with an infant insert for the earliest months. The SleepWell™ recline system (42° recline angle, one-hand operation) means your newborn can sleep in an optimal flat-ish position. The 180° rotation means you don't need to reach into a deep rear seat to lift your baby — you spin the seat to the door, load your baby, and click it back into position. The magnetic harness (no re-threading required) makes buckling a wriggly newborn much easier.

The seat supports children to 18kg / approximately 4–5 years. After that, you'd transition to a rear-facing seat like the Minikid Core or Minikid 4 Max, or to a booster like the Axkid Up.

The Minikid Core installs using the vehicle seat belt only — no ISOFIX option & no tethers required. This makes it compatible with nearly any vehicle.

The Minikid 4 Max installs using the vehicle seat belt plus auto-retracting tethers — no ISOFIX required.

• The tethers attach to the front passenger or driver's seat — important: they must attach to the front seat, not to the rear of the second-row seat in front of it.
• The integrated belt-locking system secures the vehicle belt; the auto-retracting tethers click and hold themselves in place.
• Installation is a 6-step process designed to take under 60 seconds once you know the steps.
• Three recline positions let you adjust for your vehicle's seat angle.

The Spinkid 2 installs using ISOFIX only — there is no seat belt installation option. Your vehicle must have ISOFIX anchor points (check your vehicle manual or look between the rear seat cushion and backrest).

• Click the ISOFIX arms into your vehicle's anchor points until you hear and feel a click.
• No tethers are required.
• Once installed, the seat rotates 180° at the push of a button for loading and unloading — then clicks back into the rear-facing travelling position.
• The EasyClimb™ handles help older children climb in and out independently.

The Spinkid 2 can only be used in vehicles with ISOFIX. If your vehicle doesn't have ISOFIX, the Minikid Core or Minikid 4 Max are your rear-facing options.

The Axkid Up uses a two-part installation:

• ISOFIX + support leg to anchor the seat securely to the vehicle — your vehicle must have ISOFIX to use the support leg & footrest option.
• The vehicle's own seat belt is then used to secure your child directly (not a harness — the Up is a belt-positioning booster).

The ErgoSupport™ raisable seat base ensures the vehicle belt sits correctly across your child's shoulder and hip — not across the stomach or neck. The QuickFold feature lets you fold the seat flat if you need to store it or reclaim seat space. Three Up seats can be installed side-by-side with the side impact wings removed.

Yes — if the vehicle seat angle limits how far back the Minikid 4 Max reclines, use the Axkid Angle Adjusting Wedge ($45), available separately at Mom Store. The wedge sits under the seat base and provides an extra recline angle, which is especially useful in vehicles with more upright rear seats.

Rear-facing is the safest position for young children in a car, and the research is clear. A young child's neck and spine are still developing — they are not strong enough to withstand the forward-throwing forces of a frontal crash (which accounts for around 70% of serious crashes).

When a child is rear-facing, crash forces are spread across the back, bottom, and shoulders of the seat shell — the largest, strongest surface area. The seat cradles and absorbs the impact. When forward-facing, the same crash throws the child's head and neck forward against the harness straps — a force young necks simply cannot handle safely.

Studies show rear-facing children are up to 5 times safer in frontal crashes than forward-facing children of the same age. Swedish road safety guidelines recommend rear-facing until at least 4 years old. Axkid's rear-facing seats support this: the Minikid Core goes to 28kg (~age 7) and the Minikid 4 Max to 36kg (~age 7).

This is one of the most common worries parents have — and the good news is that children genuinely don't find it uncomfortable. Children are naturally flexible and instinctively find positions that work for them: legs crossed, feet resting on the seat back, knees bent up. They don't have the same posture concerns adults project onto them.

There is no evidence that rear-facing causes leg, hip, or knee problems. Paediatric orthopaedic research supports this consistently. Children who have been rear-facing from birth don't even think about it as a constraint — it's simply how they ride in the car.

More importantly: in the event of a crash, a child's legs in a rear-facing seat are in a far safer position than dangling forward-facing. Leg injuries in rear-facing crashes are very rare. The comfort question is answered by the children themselves — they're fine. The safety answer is emphatic: keep them rear-facing as long as you can.

The Swedish Plus Test is the most rigorous car seat crash test in the world. It goes significantly beyond the minimum legal requirements in Europe and New Zealand — testing at higher speeds, in more impact directions, with stricter pass thresholds for head movement and force transfer.

This means they've been independently verified to the highest safety standard available, not just the legal minimum. When you see the Plus Test approval, you can trust the seat has genuinely been put through its paces.

UN R129 (also known as i-Size) is the current international car seat safety standard. It replaces the older ECE R44 standard and introduces stricter requirements including:

• Mandatory side-impact testing (not required under the old standard)
• Height-based sizing rather than weight-based (more accurate and more consistent)
• Requirement to be rear-facing until at least 15 months

You don't have to use a seat protector — but if you do use one, you must use an Axkid seat protector that has been crash tested with the seat. Many generic seat protectors sold have never been tested with specific models of car seats on top. In a crash, an untested protector can compress, shift, or deform in ways that affect how the car seat moves and performs.

Axkid's own seat protectors (available from $69) are crash tested and designed to be used safely with Axkid seats. They protect your car upholstery — and you know they won't cause issues in the event of a crash.

Rear-facing seats (Minikid Core, Minikid 4 Max, Spinkid 2) must be used in the rear seat of the vehicle. They should never be used in the front passenger seat if an active airbag is present — the airbag poses a serious risk to rear-facing occupants. The Minikid car seats may be used in the front seat if the passenger airbag has been deactivated.

The Axkid Up Booster Seat (forward-facing) can be used in any seating position. If installing in the front seat, always deactivate the front airbag first and adjust the seat to its rearmost position. Check your vehicle manual for guidance.

All Axkid seat covers are machine washable at 30°C. Remove the cover according to the instructions in your seat's manual, then wash on a gentle 30° cycle. Do not tumble dry, iron, or dry clean — air dry flat or hang to dry away from direct heat.

The seat shell and harness should be wiped clean with a damp cloth only — do not submerge or machine wash the shell or harness straps, as this can weaken the webbing. Dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight before reassembling.

All Axkid seats have a 10-year expiry from the date of manufacture (clearly stamped on the seat label). The Axkid Up has a product lifetime of 15 years. After the expiry date, the seat should be retired — plastics and materials degrade over time and may no longer perform as tested in a crash.

When retiring a seat, we recommend cutting through the harness straps so it cannot be picked up and used by someone else, then disposing of it responsibly.

No. After any significant crash, a car seat must be replaced — even if it looks undamaged. The structural integrity of the seat may have been compromised in ways that aren't visible to the naked eye. A seat that has been in a crash may not provide the same level of protection in a subsequent impact.

After a minor bump (low-speed, no visible damage, no deployed airbags, no injuries, and the door nearest the seat was undamaged), some manufacturers allow continued use. Check Axkid's guidance directly or contact us at hello@momstore.co.nz with details of the incident for advice.

Many insurance policies will cover the cost of replacing a car seat after an accident — worth checking with your insurer.
